Describe what you do

What is it that you do?

''As an Executive Producer, my role is to co-ordinate and oversee the development of the programmes and production teams under my management. This includes monitoring training and personal development of staff, management of on air talent and programme development. I also manage other ad-hoc projects which may come up across the network, Comic Relief etc.''
Fergus Dudley, Executive Producer

'I am in charge of running the crew (36 people) and facilities in TLS studio 8. I am also the Lighting Director.''
Alan Evans, Head of Studio & Operations

'I am just about to direct my first short film after quite a long career (15 years or so) in theatre. I wanted to expand my horizons, use the skills I have learnt over the years working with actors and new plays and try something new.''
Film Director & Writer

'I am a Director of Photography (DoP) for Television. I am involved in filming and editing documentaries, news and current affairs.''
David Hands, Director of Photography

'I am a production runner for an animation studio which involves general delivering/collecting, domestic and organisational duties.''
Terry Bane, Runner

''I work as a researcher.  I've done a bit of directing as well and a little bit of producing and sometimes operating a DV camera. As a researcher I usually find stories, contributors, locations, write up notes, go out and recce locations and people. I get everything all set up for the director. The director obviously will go out on location and film with a crew. Sometimes he'll just film on DV by himself, interview the person, shoot GVs of scenery or different things like that.''
Joyce Monaghan, Researcher

''I am a senior researcher on a daytime discussion show. I work closely with three others, a producer, an assistant producer and a junior researcher. My job is to research the subject of the show and find case studies (guests) to appear on the programme. The subjects range from week to week and I may be researching something topical and currently in the news or something more human interest led. All guests must be good speakers, have a story to tell and have strong opinions. They come from a variety of sources - depending on the subject. They all have to be thoroughly corroborated. On the day of the programme I meet all the guests I've booked and brief them before the recording. We usually have between 1-4 days to produce a one hour show of about 45 guests.''
Senior Researcher

'I work with writers, directors and producers on a project by project basis to develop scripts for film and television, from being an idea to being ready for production.''
Freelance Story Editor

''As a researcher, I am responsible for making first contact with potential contributors we may want to use on programmes. I also ensure that the stories they provide us with are accurate and fair. Coming up with production ideas is also an important role for me.''
Kevin McLaughlin, Researcher

''My job involves working extensively with Production, Development & Acquisition Executives, liasing with the Chief Executive on creative, development & production issues; development of potential projects for Film Four, and supervision and employment of a team.''
Lee Brazier, Junior Development Executive

''I identify and develop an idea/script/novel which I believe will make a great film, in collaboration with a screenwriter and in co-operation with financiers who fund the development process. I then raise the finance and gather the personnel to make the film and then I oversee the production process, financially, creatively and organisationally, right up to the point of delivery of the finished product.''
Leslee Udwin, Producer

'Being a freelance Audio Engineer, I currently specialise in supplying teams of engineers to the conference industry, and the audio industry worldwide.''
R.K.Barnes, Audio Engineer

'My job is all about managing the technical developements of the project - finding better ways of working, training others in the use of the system and producing documentation and training material.''
Jonathan Clinkscales, Acting System Specialist, NeTune project (IP data over satellite)

'As co-owner and Creative Director, I steer and direct the company's creative direction in all forms - from TV commercials to feature films. I motivate the creative team, act as figurehead. From time to time I direct films - notably co-directing 'Chicken Run' with Nick Park.''
Peter Lord, Founding Director

'I am a Camera Assistant for model Animation - this involves setting up cameras for 6 of the 8 working animators, looking after camera angles, adjusting lighting setups, keeping equipment in good working order and an awareness of schedule and continuity.''
Junior Camera

''Being a runner entails greeting clients, making sure they're comfortable in the edit suite, and making them drinks. If something's finished I'd be delivering a tape in Soho to another studio to get the sound laid. It's doing general things that people need.''
Rosa, Post Production Runner

''In my role as Online Editor, it's my job to edit and finish broadcast programmes - colour grade, caption, add special effects and produce a technically correct final tape for transmission.''
