Carlisle Antonio, Skillset Millennium Award Winner

Carlisle Antonio, Director & Producer

In 2004 Carlisle Antonio produced a short film about the representation of people of colour in television, radio and the press. As part of his Skillset Millennium Award he gained a two week work placement with the BBC's consumer programme, Watchdog.

Since then he has completed a 10 week contract with Icon Films, where he was appointed Associate Producer for a Channel 5 series 'Gangsters Wives' which he wrote, developed and co-produced.

He has been approached to work as a Director/Producer on a series for the 2007 Jamestown anniversary in Virginia for an American TV channel.

Carlisle said :

"I found the training and support I received with my Skillset Millennium Award invaluable because not only did I learn new skills, but most importantly I gained confidence in myself and my self belief. The Skillset Millennium Awards were an opportunity for me to put my skills into positive action by showcasing my talents and abilities to the industry with a view to securing long term employment."

The Skillset Millennium Awards offered talented individuals from culturally diverse backgrounds the chance to gain the skills and experience they need to break into a career in the media.

Winners received a grant to complete a community based film, radio, website or print media project and up to £10,000 worth of BBC training, which included a work placement.

The awards, funded by lottery money through the Millennium Commission, were designed to improve diversity in the audio visual industries where Skillset's Employment Census shows that ethnic minorities currently make up only 7.4% of the workforce.

The awards have kick started the careers of more than 100 talented individuals between 2001 and 2004.
