Millennium Awards
Between 2001 and 2004, Skillset gave 120 grants to individuals from the UK's black and minority ethnic communities to support them in developing media skills that could be used in a project that would benefit their community.
The Skillset Millennium Awards were small Lottery grants which enabled talented individuals a grant to complete a film, radio, website or print media project beneficial to their communities. Awards were distributed through not for profit organisations across the UK and funded by the Millennium Commission. Winners also received up to £10,000 worth of BBC training giving them the technical skills and knowledge needed to complete their projects and to progress a career in media. Projects included producing an item for local radio, establishing a website or writing a newsletter.
"There's so much talent out there in our community and it should be exploited positively." Mark Williams, Skillset Millennium Award Winner
The Skillset Millennium Award scheme finished in July 2004 and was a resounding success. Whether web based, video, radio or in print the award winners produced projects that had a unique resonance, artistic and cultural reference particular to the community groups that they represented.

"Since the showcase I have been successful in gaining a position on a post graduate course in Radio Journalism. Without the opportunity I have been privileged to have with the Skillset Millennium Awards, I would never have contemplated entering the ranks of mature student life. Thank you!" Dave Pascoe, 54, Skillset Millennium Award Winner
