The Skillset Open Door Awards provided 40 Londoners who are disabled people or from minority ethnic groups with the training and experience they needed to get ahead in their careers.

The Awards really have helped to open the doors of the media industries to bright new talent. The gifted individuals bring with them new stories and new voices that will enrich and enhance the industries.

Following made–to–measure training, the Awardees were given the opportunity to make a project in their chosen field – radio journalism, new media or HD video production.

Now you can find out more about each beneficiary and their work – click on the image below. This will open a Flash player in a new window.

The projects cover a wide range of subjects of particular significance to the Awardees and the communities they represent. For example:

  • 'Trippy' is a fictional account of a young woman affected by schizophrenia;
  • 'Without Borders' documents the plight of young immigrants to the UK;
  • 'Natty on the Run' examines how the power of music can be used to combat racism and promote tolerance.

Beneficiaries have secured employment in mainstream television news jouralism, online media and radio journalism at the BBC and in other areas of production. Others have gone on to study within their specialist area at further and higher education institutions.

Two of the projects have received awards recognition. 'Without Borders' by Annabelle Danchie won the Images of Black Women (IBW) West London Award and Gillian Salmon and Just's 'The Vacancy' won the 2nd IBW International Award, supported by the UK Film Council.

The Open Door Awards were one of Skillset's responses to the shortage of skilled minority ethnic people working in the media industries. The scheme supported the UK Film Council's Leadership on Diversity Charter to which Skillset is a signatory.

Skillset would like to express its gratitude to the sponsors and partners who helped to deliver the scheme:

  • European Social Fund
  • London Development Agency
  • i–define
  • The Video College
  • VET
  • BBC Academy
