Diversifying Radio
Diverse radio audiences need diverse radio programmes. Skillset found a way to encourage the radio industry to open its doors to talented, progressive practitioners by creating the Skillset Open Door Awards.
The awards provided 40 Londoners from minority ethnic groups or disabled people with training, mentoring and the opportunity to make a project in their chosen field - radio journalism, new media or HD video production.
9 awardees produced Radio programmes as part of the scheme: Naomi Bonney-Turner, Paula Deshong-Charles, Forhad Hussain, Julius Mbaluto, Fiona McKinson, Rachel Apoku Adutwumwaah, Natasha Page, Vander Peter, Vinay Sharma, Elizabeth Ukanah and Deborah Vaughan.
These gifted individuals bring with them new stories and new voices that will enrich and enhance the industries.
Mentoring and training in Radio production and other key skills was kindly provided by:
- Mary Price - BBC Learning and development - provided a weeks intensive radio production skills training.
- VET - provided a weeks long training in video production
- I-define - Dawn Winder provided self marketing and branding skills, along with networking skills to all beneficiaries (three half day sessions in total)
- The Video College - provided production training over a week
- Peter Stewart - provided careers advice specific to Radio beneficiaries at a day long workshop. He focused on CV's and interviews and had a 15 minute face to face guidance with the radio beneficiaries
