Know your stuff
Afraid so... it's all about homework.
You're certain you've got the talent, but you need to be armed with all the knowledge you can muster, and demonstrate it at every opportunity!
Use the following sources to shape your research:
- Read the trade press for your industry: find out about the people working in it. Find out who gets commissions, what the developments in technology are, and look at the job adverts to get an idea of what kind of jobs are out there. You don't have to take out expensive subscriptions - many are available in good reference libraries.
- Find out about trade associations, guilds, unions, societies and networking organisations: These organisations offer support and representation, advice about contracts, rates of pay, health and safety etc. They also host events, provide networking opportunities and organise training. Many offer reduced membership fees for new entrants.
- Join online communities: They provide a forum for the exchange of ideas, information and links to industry directories (some of which are available online). They're full of information about new initiatives, job opportunities, and contact details for companies and individuals. This type of information can go out of date very quickly, so always check before sending an application.
- Visit company websites: Find useful background information on personnel, product information, contact details and job opportunities. Always check a company's website before making an application or attending an interview.
- Attend industry events: Meet people face to face. You'll find out lots of insider information and get to put names to faces. Note everything down in your contacts book and throw yourself into networking frenzy, your future depends on it!
- Look out for opportunities in your area: Find out about the organisations that are active in your region and keep up with local developments. Some of these (e.g. Regional Screen Agencies) are publicly funded and have reference libraries where you can read the trade press and consult directories.
