Manage yourself as a freelancer

Manage yourself as a freelancer

Being a freelancer, you are your own boss, you can decide when you want to work and when you want time off, and you can manage your own professional development.

However, you have to find your own work, you have to cope with the down times and you have to work out how best to adapt to change.

About a quarter of freelancers find they have too much work, most just 'get by', and a small proportion find it hard to get any work at all.

To increase your chances of success, you need to be well organised and plan your strategy:

  • Decide on your 'core business'
  • Seek out new opportunities
  • Network continually
  • Understand the different market sectors
  • Update your skills and industry knowledge
You also need to manage your own finances, including tax, VAT and National Insurance contributions, and otherwise function as a small business. The information below will help to make your life a lot easier.
