Moving up or sideways
Sometimes it can seem like you've reached a glass ceiling in your career, that demand for your skill is shrinking, or you want a change of pace or lifestyle. When this happens, and there's no clear way forward - don't become disheartened. There are ways to get around this.
For instance, you might consider:
- Transferring your skills to another industry or sector;
- improving your marketing and networking skills to take better advantage of new opportunities, e.g. go to more industry events like Broadcast Live;
- seeking specialist training in a new skill or new technology;
- taking a sidestep to broaden your experience and make yourself more attractive to employers, e.g. work on a short film in order to set up from focus puller to DOP;
- moving from employment to freelancing - or vice versa;
- developing your own creative portfolio, etc.
Don't frown upon any possibility. You'll have to believe in yourself more than ever and remember that a big part of your job is to keep yourself in work.
