Find about your rights
When facing redundancy, your first step should be making sure your rights are not being compromised. Do you know what 'package' (if any) you are being offered? Do you understand all the details?
Pay particular attention to how the company is going about making you redundant. Think about the following questions:
- Have you been properly consulted?
- Have you been offered a new job within the company?
- Have you been given time to search for a new job?
- How much notice have you been given?
- Redundancy pay - are you entitled? If so, to how much?
- What are the arrangements in relation to the pension scheme situation and options?
To help you find out whether you're been fairly treated, here are a few useful sources of information about your employment rights:
- The Trades Union Congress (TUC)has all the advice you need on its website; they also have a helpline: 0870 600 4882
- It is adviseable to get in touch with the trade union covering your occupation, e.g. BECTU, Equity, NUJ... etc.
