Seek support

Reaching out for help is the first step in fighting back. Speak to your family and close friends about the situation. They will probably also feel concerned for you, so it can help everyone to talk it through together.

Remember, it's the job that's being made redundant, not you. This is an important distinction. The end result might be the same, but it makes a big difference to your morale, your self-esteem and your ability to move on.

At this stage, the most important thing is to stand up for your rights. If you're not member of a union, you should join one. Visit the Trades Union Congress (TUC) or ACAS websites to check whether you've been treated correctly.

If you think that you've been treated unfairly, your union representative or a solicitor who specialises in employment law should be involved to assist you with the legal implications.
