Have an action plan

The grieving period is over and it is time to move on. Your job may be gone but your skills and talent are not. Count them as your blessings and start making decisions about your future.

Your future career options include:

a) A new job in the same field. Consider the following:

  • What are the current opportunities in your field and part of the country?
  • Will you consider relocating?
  • Do you need some training to refresh your skills?
  • Are there other career paths to which you could easily transfer your skills?
  • Is your contacts book up to date?

The Networking and job hunting section of this website is full of hints and tips on how to go about finding new work. If you're going to reconsider your whole career, the help of an expert will prove invaluable. Get in touch with us to book a personalised advice session.

b) Self-employment
If you're thinking of going freelance, there are a number of things to consider. You'll be responsible for paying your own tax and National Insurance. You'll also have to find your own work and might have to supply your own kit. A freelance lifestyle doesn't suit everyone, but many freelancers enjoy the freedom and variety that it brings.

For tax purposes you will be considered a small business - which also means that you can ask for free business start-up advice. For more information about what being self-employed entails and for sources of help and advice, visit the Manage yourself as a freelancer section.

c) A new occupation outside the media industries
If you're considering moving into another industry or occupation, look for the Sector Skills Council representing the interests of your new chosen industry. They'll be able to provide you with the best careers advice for that field.

You can also find out more from the guilds, professional bodies and associations that represent the interests of workers in that area.

Perhaps now is the time to try that idea you have for a new enterprise or to learn a new skill. Whatever it is, go for it!
