What advice would you give to someone whose career needed a kick-start?
''Do a course and really make the most of the work experience plan. Or start as a runner. Do something that will make you stand out from the rest. When I sent my CV, I had absolutely no experience in the industry and no qualifications but I made a huge collage using magazine cuttings about myself. Later the interviewer told me that's what got me the job.'' Rosa, Post Production Runner
''Get a good broad basic understanding of the whole industry, then specialise in an area that really interests you. But don't specialise too soon.''
Mark Capstick, Chief Engineer
''Try to get into a company any way you can, usually as a runner. Make sure the company isn't too large so that there will be scope for you to progress. Find out the company's attitude to you using their kit and be prepared to work and put in plenty of your free time.''
Online Editor
''Keep training yourself in the latest software. The more you know the better chance you have of getting better jobs in the future.''
Richard Balkham, Multimedia Developer
"Pursue excellence. Be flexible. Be aware of all media. Be intelligent, charming and hard working.''
Peter Lord, Founding Director
"Surround yourself with people more talented than you. Always make sure you have something to bring to the table.''
Nigel Smith, Writer/Producer
"Be your own critic and be a harsh critic''
David Hands, Director of Photography
"For anyone needing a kick-start to their career, my advice would be to get a mentor that knows people and the industry. Really opens doors.''
Jeremy Mosler, Supervisory Engineer
"Personality, determination and a calm nature will get you a long way!''
Hamish Hamilton, Film Director TV/Film/Music and events
''Get as much experience as you can. If you are not in the industry already then do anything you can to show you are keen - hospital radio, write articles, local radio, make videos etc. Make sure you relate the skills you have already to the skills needed for the job in media, that's what I did because I didn't have the experience of media but I did have experience. Take up all training opportunities - including courses, seminars, talks etc.''
Emma Bowler, Assistant Producer
