"The BGO scheme has been an extremely positive experience for us. Work has always been either a feast or a famine which causes a lot of problems. Before the scheme we had no systems or plan for our long term approach. We just did the work as it came along. Working flat out on a commission with no projects or proposals in the pipeline so when we finished and said what's next? What came next was usually a famine, a hiatus which was bad for morale and bad for cash flow. Now that I look back I don't know how we managed."
Planning ahead and taking time out to work on lining up future projects was one of the first areas BGO advisor Vanessa Stone wanted to address suggesting that Elizabeth take one day a week to look at this issue.
"Vanessa took a look at our company and in the most sensitive and clever way, she pointed out the flaws in our structure, the lack of definition of our roles and how this was hindering our growth. There was a lot of doubling up which was wasting time and energy and meant we were getting on each others nerves! I took her advice and have stuck to taking the one day a week to look at future projects - How far proposals have got? Who is looking at them? Do they need more work? And it has really made a difference to the business. You can already see the effects of the scheme and how things are changing for the better. I've started delegating and communicating more and it's enabling not only the business to grow but its also allowing other staff the room to grow which is great.
"Thanks to Skillset our business is already profiting from the BGO scheme and hopefully this is just the beginning."
