Specialist IT skills training
Freelancers and temps get the job done and quickly fill skills gaps when you have a big project to complete. But then they go away and take their brilliant skills with them. There are many ways you can train your staff in the specialist skills that will bring long–term investment to your company.
They include:
- external training courses
- in-house training
- e-learning
- on the job learning
- using printed manuals and books
- using interactive CD-ROMs and DVDs
Courses
The Skillset/BFI course database lists nearly 6000 courses in film, televison, radio and interactive media in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Look out for Skillset Approved courses in this database. Courses that have the Skillset Approved mark are ones which meet specific industry needs and are of the highest quality and standard.

On-the-job learning
This can be cost-effective and appropriate – the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) describes it as:
"learning through watching and observing someone with more experience performing a task"
You'll find more about on-the-job learning on the CIPD website – and if you aren't sure what the difference is between training and learning, the Institute makes the important distinction that:
"Training is an instructor-led, content based intervention, leading to desired changes in behaviour.
"Learning is a self-directed, work-based process, leading to increased adaptive potential."
