Contract and terms of employment

Contract and terms of employment
You've found the right candidate for your vacancy. You've interviewed them and offered them the job. They've said 'yes'. There is now a contract of employment between you, even if you don't have it written down. What happens next? You'll need to:

  • Check their references and other credentials they need for the post
  • Write a statement of employment
  • Register as an employer
  • Keep staff records

There's a lot to do, for sure. Business Link helps you keep track of the paperwork with a comprehensive guide and interactive tools.

Paying your employees
Becoming an employer brings many responsibilities - they include paying your staff on time and keeping accurate records.

What used to be called the Inland Revenue is now HM Revenue and Customs and they also deal with VAT. HMRC claim in their advertising that 'tax doesn't have to be taxing' and on their website there are some useful tools and checklists to help you:

  • Register as an employer
  • Understand and use pay-as-you-earn (PAYE)
  • Take on a new employee
  • Set up National Insurance payments
  • Make payments
  • Prepare your tax returns

HMRC's telephone helpline for new employers is on 0845 60 70 143.

Business Link's guidance Taxes, returns and payroll also guides you through the paperwork of being a new employer.
