With resounding success over the past two years, National Skills Day aims to increase the profile and raise awareness of the need for improved skills training within the sector.

National Skills Day is a rare chance to catch up on new skills, learn from colleagues and try something new. Talk to your boss, colleagues or HR department about what you could organise to support NSD and promote skills development in your workplace.

Why was National Skills Day created?

The focus of National Skills Day is twofold. Firstly, it aims to showcase the talent of the workforce within the sector. Secondly, it brings together the whole of the creative media industries to make a concerted commitment to the importance of skills and skills development.

National Skills Day encourages companies across the broadcast, film and interactive media sectors to give their employees opportunities to broaden their horizons, improve and update a variety of skills and to experience new or different roles.

On each National Skills Day, organisations across the UK such as Channel 4, Pact, BBC, five, ITV and BECTU have offered their staff opportunities to participate in a diverse selection of creative activities promoting the value and importance of skills. Each year more than 5,000 individuals took part in over 300 National Skills Day activities.

What could I expect from this experience?

Workshops on personal development, job swap programmes and mentoring opportunities have been particularly successful. Last year the industry shone a spotlight on skills by staging a variety of activities including:

  • stand up comedy at S4C
  • blogging and digital switchover workshops at Channel 4
  • job shadowing at SMG
  • online career sessions at the BBC
  • work experience on "Milkshake!" at five
  • and much, much more
