Skillset's offer to the Film industry

Film offer cover image

Guided by the Film Skills Strategy Committee and following extensive research and consultation with industry representatives, Skillset has produced a series of priorities and recommendations for our work with the sector.

These will be regularly reviewed to ensure the focus of our activity remains relevant to industry needs.

Skillset will:

  • deliver positive action training schemes to increase opportunities for black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) talent and those from under-represented groups and ensure the UK film industry workforce reflects the diversity of UK society;
  • provide careers advice and guidance to both new entrants and the existing workforce through Skillset Careers, a one-stop shop for all sectors of the industry;
  • strengthen links between education and industry by further developing the Skillset Screen Academy Network to ensure its curriculum and programmes meet the skills needs of the film industry and best practice is shared between all the Academies;

  • develop further opportunities for new entrants through structured training courses, the delivery of a Set Crafts Apprenticeship Scheme and a Film Trainee Network linking film productions with the right trainees, to ensure the UK film industry's world renowned craft, technical and production skills are passed on to the next generation of crew;
  • continue to support the industry's existing workforce to update their skills in priority areas such as new technologies, business skills and health and safety through subsidised short courses and direct financial support through Skillset's Screen Bursaries scheme;
  • project based training for freelancers and employees through the Training Linked to Production Programme and an industry developed screenwriting scheme;
  • support for company employees to update their business skills by enabling companies across all sectors to access funding to train their staff;
  • provide support to training providers to develop innovative training courses that are flexible enough to meet the needs of the industry's predominantly freelance workforce;
  • work with industry to turn the current voluntary levy, the Skills Investment Fund (SIF), to a mandatory footing to ensure a sustainable investment in the UK's freelance production workforce.
