The Future of UK Filmmaking

So, what does the future hold for British film?
As we've seen, we are living through a relatively strong period for the British film industry - certainly in comparison with the lean years of the 1980s. The challenge is to build on this upwards momentum.
Back in 2002, Sir Alan Parker made a major speech to the film industry. Looking to the future, he identified three basic 'must have' assets if the UK wants to build a sustainable, successful industry. First, an effective distribution of our films into the global marketplace; second, a stable but cutting edge film infrastructure to service the global film industry; and third, and perhaps most importantly, a world class workforce.
Skillset is playing a leading role in helping to tackle the third issue. In partnership with the UK Film Council, it has developed a comprehensive UK film skills strategy called A Bigger Future.
A £50 million, five-year training and education strategy for the UK film industry, A Bigger Future is born out of a consultation process involving the whole industry - and out of Skillset's detailed industry research such as its Census and 2004 Feature Film Production Workforce Survey.
A Bigger Future is looking to tackle key issues such as the lack of training opportunities - both for new entrants and established professionals - available within film.
It will be one of the key weapons to help the UK in its fight to build a sustainable, competitive and successful film industry in years to come.
