Why her? Report: Factors that have influenced successful women in Film and TV

The Why Her? report, launched in October 2009, highlights the key factors that have influenced the careers of successful women working in film and TV today.

Whilst some areas in film have witnessed a growth in the representation of women, there remains a number in which women have failed to make significant inroads; examples are women make up only 4% in lighting, 8% in sound and 15% of those in camera.

Skillset and Women in Film and Television commissioned interviews with a sample of women who have succeeded in each of the following male-dominated grades:

  • Camera
  • Sound
  • Direction
  • Screenwriting

The aim of this qualitative research was to see if there are common influencing factors for success and to identify recommendations and inform Skillset's activities in tackling under-representation.
