Production Department

The number of people employed in the Production Department, and the level of delegation required, varies enormously depending on the size and scale of the film being produced. A short film may only need a Producer, Production Manager and one or two Production Runners. However, even a low budget feature film may require a Producer, several Executive Producers, Co-producer, Line Producer, Associate Producers, Production Manager, Production Co-ordinator, Assistant Production Co-ordinators and numerous Production Runners, to ensure that the film is made, and that the production runs smoothly.

The plasticity of the Production Department means that there are some crossovers between the various roles in the organisation, particularly in the Producers' roles. Indeed, it is sometimes only those who are actually involved in a film's production who can define a specific Producer's role on that production. However, this flexibility also makes the work of Producers, and of the Production Department, challenging, exciting and rewarding.
