Film job profiles/unit minibus driver
Unit Minibus Drivers work during a production as part of the driving team that transports cast, extras and crew to and from locations and unit bases. Although they may be junior members of the driving team, they must be over 25 years of age for insurance purposes when working on a film shoot. While the role does not require extensive training or skills, Minibus Drivers must be able to drive safely and carefully, and be good communicators and team players.
Responsibilities
Unit Minibus Drivers are responsible for transporting cast, extras and crew during a film shoot. This may involve picking people up early in the morning to drive them to the location of the shoot, or to the studio, and taking them back later in the evening. During the day, Minibus Drivers must be available to carry out additional driving duties, such as ferrying extras and crew, or light equipment, between locations. They work as part of a team of Drivers, which is overseen by a Transport Captain. Minibus Drivers are responsible for consulting maps in order to ensure that they take the most appropriate route possible, and arrive on time and at the right place. As the minibuses are usually hired in, Drivers are not normally responsible for maintaining their vehicles. During the shoot, they are responsible for making sure that their vehicles are clean and roadworthy before they are used to transport cast or crew. Above all, they are responsible for their passengers' safety when driving the minibus.
Skills
Unit Minibus Drivers must be competent, confident drivers, who can drive safely within the confines of a busy film studio or a location. They may be required to manoeuvre the vehicle in very tight spaces, and often have to access locations in very remote areas. They must drive within the legal limits at all times, and they must be aware of the relevant Health and Safety legislation. A good sense of geography, and strong map reading skills and planning abilities are important. Minibus Drivers must be good communicators, and be able to get on with their passengers. They need to be adaptable and flexible, as plans can change at the last minute on a film shoot. They must also be reliable and punctual.
Qualifications/Experience
Minibus Drivers working on film shoots must be over 25 years old, with extensive driving experience. While no formal academic qualifications are required, it is important that Minibus Drivers have a high level of literacy, as well as good communication skills, in order to carry out their role effectively.
