The role of the department for culture media and support

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport is responsible for setting policy on UK film culture and industry issues. They aim to help create a strong film industry that brings cultural and economic benefits to the UK.

The DCMS was established in 1992. Its remit covers all aspects of the Government's policies in the areas of the arts, heritage, tourism, media, the creative industries, sport, the National Lottery and gaming.

It is a relatively small body and it mainly works through a large number of non-departmental public bodies, such as the Arts Council and the UK Film Council, who are responsible for delivering policy in the areas that they serve.
