London College of Communication / UAL and Ealing Institute of Media / EHWLC

London College of Communication / UAL and Ealing Institute of Media / EHWLC receive their Screen Academy Award
Skillset have approved the joint bid from these two London institutions to become a Skillset Screen Academy.

The London College of Communication, part of the University of the Arts London, was one of the first institutions to offer a degree programme in film-making in 1977. The LCC's Film Department now has over 250 students on its international renowned undergraduate and postgraduate film-making courses. Students produce ambitious films, shot throughout the world, generously supported by the film industry and have won the prestigious Brief Encounters national film schools' competition four times in the last six years. The LCC has recently completed a £25 million campus investment, based in the centre of London, the centrepiece being a new Media building and studio complex, housing the film department.

Dr Will Bridge, Head of London College of Communication, said:
"The London College of Communication, the largest constituent College of University of the Arts London, has been equipping students with an excellent grounding in the skills of the film industry for almost 30 years now, so being granted Screen Academy status is a welcome recognition of the expertise and passion we have for film. Employers know that our graduates are some of the best film students in the country. In the future, I expect to see students who graduate from our Screen Academy achieving even greater things in the film industry, both in the UK and worldwide."

The Ealing Institute of Media (EIM) is a new, bespoke training facility that will extend the solid tradition of high achievement already established at Ealing & West London College.

An official Centre of Vocational Excellence, built to prepare students for the career pathways and creative practices of the future; the courses on offer reflect the fast-changing opportunities in Film, Television, Animation, Interactive Media, and Graphic Art & Design. Classes aim to combine theoretical understanding with the practical acquisition of skills and the development of professional practice that is required in the competitive and vibrant industry of design and media.

A product of £15 million worth of investment, EIM will open in September 2005 and will include: studios for TV, multimedia, graphic design, recording, digital animation & gaming, control rooms, recording & mixdown suites, PC & Macintosh platforms, darkroom facilities and a fitness centre.

In the heart of Ealing Green, building on the already strong media heritage in the area, EIM could not be better placed in terms of proximity to countless successful media and art-related companies. All strands of study offer strong links with employers such as the BBC and Ealing Studios, who not only contribute to the curriculum and offer work experience placements, but also provide key speakers and guests for master classes. Students will be encouraged to develop their own flair and creative style through working with industry professionals and collaborating with fellow students in related fields. EIM is a highly motivated creative arena where talented students will excel with likeminded individuals and experts.

The combined work of EIM, Skillset, the LSC, Ealing Studios, the BBC, DfES and the LDA endeavours to connect education and employment by training students of all ages, backgrounds and ethnic origins in the practical fields of media and design. We are not just planning to teach students about media, we are trying to prepare them for working in the industry.

David Hannah, Ealing Institute of Media, said:

"The Screen Academies are a fantastic opportunity for students who are serious about entering the UK Film Industry with a view towards a sustainable career. Access into the industry over recent years has largely been restricted to those who have contacts. The Screen Academies will widen the opportunities for talented Black and Minority Ethnic candidates in particular to get practical training in 35mm film production.

Becoming a Screen Academy unites one of the finest film education institutions (London College of Communications, University of the Arts London) with one of the principal FE training providers (EIM) in the country. Developing this project with both Skillset & LCC/UAL has been terrifically exciting. We have high hopes of making a real difference to the way people are trained to enter the industry."
