Screen Academy at the National Film and Television School

Skillset announces the approval of the NFTS as a Skillset Screen Academy.
The National Film and Television School is the UK's leading centre of excellence for education in film and television programme making. Since launching in 1971, it has turned out numerous world-class film and television practitioners. Its postgraduate-post experience courses are the product of a unique partnership between Government and the film and television industry, many of whose members teach on its courses and advise on curriculum development, ensuring that the School stays relevant to the Industry's present and future needs. Among its many distinguished Alumni are BAFTA-winning directors David Yates (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix; Sex Traffic; State of Play) and Beeban Kidron (Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason), pioneering documentarist Nick Broomfield (Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer), cinematographers David Tattersall (Star Wars: Episodes I-III) and the Oscar-nominated Roger Deakins (The Village, The Ladykillers), and the creator of Wallace and Gromit, animator Nick Park, CBE. The NFTS is also the home of the renowned ShortCourses@NFTS programme, which specialises in skills upgrading for professionals.
Nik Powell, Director of the National Film and Television School, said:
"As the UK's leading film and television school, the NFTS applauds this initiative. We are strongly supportive of Skillset's achievement and looking forward to working with the other Screen Academies, Skillset and the UK Film Council to develop and implement the Screen Academy Network strategy.
"The NFTS has an enviable track record in developing some of the brightest and best filmmakers now working on the global stage: directors such as David Yates (in pre-production on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix), Beeban Kidron (Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason), Nick Park (Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit), Nick Broomfield (Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer) and Michael Caton-Jones, who is busy shooting Basic Instinct 2. And this is not to mention cinematographers like David Tattersall, who shot the last three Star Wars films, Roger Deakins, who shot all the Coen Brother's films, nor the hundreds of other NFTS alumni working in the UK and Hollywood today. In 2004 alone, NFTS graduates won 79 awards and 82 nominations, while our students have racked Royal Television Society Awards, Broadcast Young Talent Awards, an Oscar Nomination, a Golden Reel and the Becks Futures Award in the past four months. We are positive that the Screen Academy system will help us and the other Screen Academies to educate more and more world-class young talent like them for the UK Industry in the future".
