Funding for people with disabilities
Employees and freelance workers are eligible for equipment and other assistance under the Employment Service's Access to Work scheme (ATW). Details are available from your local Disability Employment Adviser (DEA) who is a member of a Disability Service Team, and can be contacted through your local Jobcentre or Jobcentre Plus.
Trainees not in employment who need aids, equipment or other help similar to that provided under the Access to Work scheme should seek help from the local Learning and Skills Council . Contact the general enquiries helpline on 0870 900 6800.
Individual charities and trusts may also be able to help.
Students on accredited courses may also be eligible for Disabled Students' Allowances.
Skill: National Bureau for Students with Disabilities has helpful publications and up–to–date advice on DSA.
Skillset supports courses that target or include disabled students. Such courses or workshops should have better support resources than others, though they may only be short 'taster' courses. But ,they are often fully funded, and can offer invaluable experience. Check Disability links for contacts.
