Areas of skills prioritised by the funds

The purpose of Skillset's funds is to facilitate the development and delivery of training related activities addressing skill areas identified as a priority by Skillset's research programme and through regular consultation with industry.

All three funds and the different funding schemes into which they are structured target different groups within the workforce of the creative media industries. Organisations must ensure their applications match the specific priorities stipulated by the funding schemes they are requesting support from.

In broad terms, Skillset funds will support training and development activities aiming to benefit:

  • Skill areas related to the UK's film, television, interactive media, animation and computer games industries;
  • Health & Safety for all departments and grades;
  • Training across all departments and grades aimed at professionals from under represented groups;
  • Business, management and leadership skills;
  • Technical & Craft Skills;
  • Training on the impact and use of new technologies;
  • Cross-departmental training for all departments and grades;
  • Production and Production office skills, including Production Accounting;
  • Post Production, including SFX and VFX;
  • Exhibition and Distribution training across all departments and grades;
  • HR support for companies, and company training strategies.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of priorities and is just to provide a broad overview; more detailed and specific funding priorities can be found in each of our funding programmes.

Activities we don't fund

  • Those of no benefit to the UK's film, television, interactive media, animation and computer games industries;
  • Those not addressing the priorities outlined by detailed funding programmes;
  • Film or video production and cinema exhibition;
  • Those designed only to benefit the business interests of a single employer;
  • Activities that have already taken place or started;
  • Applications to replace or subsidise statutory funds;
  • Capital or building applications;
  • Equipment purchases; rental equipment is usually considered a better choice. However, if your application shows how the purchase of small items is essential to delivering your project; this might be considered. It is advisable to get in touch with the relevant fund contact before drawing up your budget.
