CD Rom

Overview - Interactive CD/DVD

In the 1980s and 1990s CDs and CD-ROMs were all the rage, capturing the British public with their new and amazing technologies. They incorporated better quality sound and picture, with the ability to hold more information than in previous media forms. CD-ROMs also allowed one of the first opportunities for interactivity. Although the growth of the Internet and MP3 technology has affected the CD-ROM sector there is still a market for interactive CDs, largely in training and education.

Now CDs are everyday items, and the world is captured by even newer technologies. DVDs - Digital Versatile (or Video) Discs - allow far more information, in compact form, than videotapes.

With their 'added extras' including special effects documentaries, cast and crew profiles and alternative languages, DVDs are becoming more and more popular.

Mini-discs and MP3s allow similar compact information for music and sound data. With so many alternative formats available, there are many occupational roles that simply involve converting information from one medium to another, while retaining its original quality, manipulating and adapting data for use on a variety of new media platforms.
