Introduction

The development of a Photo Imaging Skills Strategy will provide fundamental and invaluable support for those working within the sector to articulate their skills development needs both now and in the future.

The development of a Photo Imaging Skills Strategy will provide fundamental and invaluable support for those working within the sector to articulate their skills development needs both now and in the future.

By providing an up-to-date and coherent picture of the industry, its sub-sectors and priorities, this strategy can establish a credible position from which to galvanise support from national and regional funders and government. This is essential to ensure that any initiatives implemented meet the needs of the Photo Imaging industry in developing and maintaining a skilled and productive workforce that will maintain its competitive edge both nationally and internationally. It will also aim to provide educators and private training providers with clear indicators of the industry's current and future needs, to enable them to better respond to sector demands in their course content, development and delivery.

This skills strategy will, in the future, become part of Skillset's Sector Skills Agreement to be recognised and agreed with government and funders and will influence the skills funding landscape for the Photo Imaging sector throughout the UK for many years to come.

The immediate priorities of this strategy have been to:
  • Define the Photo Imaging sector and its workforce

  • Identify the short, medium and long-term skills issues faced by the sector

  • Examine how skills needs are currently being met

  • Examine the existing training and education provision for the sector and how well it meets the industry's needs

  • Propose solutions and recommendations to reduce skills gaps and shortages both now and in the future, whether through the development of new qualifications or training provision, or through the brokering of new partnerships between industry and educators.

  • This strategy should be seen as an evolving work in progress, laying the groundwork for its future development and providing an appropriate conduit for continuing industry consultation. It is also hoped that its recommendations will serve as a platform from which to build vital links between industry and educators that will have mutual benefits for both.
