3.6 Industry Support Services

Industry Support Services

The Support Services industry has become increasingly important within the Photo Imaging sector due to the huge technological changes that have taken place in the last decade.

Increasing use of digital technology requires a dedicated infrastructure to maintain and support equipment, and to ensure images and data are stored securely without risk of file corruption or loss. Even the simplest products use sophisticated electronics, requiring specialised knowledge and technical ability for maintenance and support when problems arise. Because such skills are normally beyond the remit of the average photographer or technician, specialist Support Services roles have been developed to meet these needs.

In addition, an increase in the number of volume-driven retail outlets has resulted in a reduction in in-store specialist staff, in turn leading to a greater demand for Support Services.

Support Service roles typically encompass:

  • Installation and maintenance of computer hardware, software, and related equipment
  • Server and network maintenance
  • Data security and backup
  • Equipment repair
  • Equipment hire
  • IT support and digital understanding
These services are not necessarily unique to the Photo Imaging sector, and generally fall within the remit of other Sector Skills Councils. Where they do draw on specific Photo Imaging skills, these tend to be the same skills required by the various Photo Imaging sub-sectors, covered elsewhere in this document. However, there are qualifications, such as City and Guilds' 6923 (Photography) and 6924 (Vocational Photography) that can complement the electronic or scientific qualifications that are often used by Industry Support Service; hence it is important that any potential developments or changes to these are fully informed by feedback from this sub-sector.
