Intelligence Gathering
Skillset is currently carrying out a detailed scoping exercise in order to assess the best way of continuing its programme of research within the Photo Imaging sector. Due to the current stage of this exercise, activity to date has been limited to the qualitative exercises and analysis of secondary sources outlined elsewhere in this document. Skillset will in future, work to integrate all sectors of the Photo Imaging industry into its regular cycle of research.
The primary aims of this research will be to provide Skillset with:
A specific research project, in association with ELWa (Education and Learning Wales) to scope the size, shape, learning issues, skills needs and current provision of the sector in Wales will start early 2006. Skillset will also carry out a similar project in Scotland, in association with the Scottish Executive and The European Social Fund, as part of the "Promoting Workplace Learning" project, also starting early 06. The findings from both these projects will be made available on Skillset's website.
Skillset plans to work in association with City and Guilds to support their research project covering their entire suite of photographic qualifications. It is anticipated that this work will begin in Spring 2006 and link closely with our own work to develop and update our National Occupational Standards for the sector.
The research and intelligence that will inform our work on Foundation Degrees will help us to define criteria for further work regarding HE and FE generally. In particular, further work is needed to identify progression routes and collate a definitive list of courses relevant to the sector; this will be included in a number of planned research programmes, but Skillset is also working to devise appropriate methodologies for gathering wider quantitative data to address these areas.

The primary aims of this research will be to provide Skillset with:
- Accurate information about the number of people employed in the Photo Imaging sector and the demographic make-up of this workforce
- Information concerning training needs and the skills gaps and shortages that exist within the sector
