Trade bodies and industry organisations

Advertising Association
The Advertising Association is a federation of 32 trade bodies and organisations representing the advertising and promotional marketing industries including advertisers, agencies, media and support services. It is the only body that speaks for all sides of the industry. The AA's remit concerns the mutual interests of the business as a whole.

All Party Parliamentary Group on Publishing
The All Party Parliamentary Group on Publishing aims to promote the publishing industry and meets throughout the year to discuss issues challenging this sector and bring them to the attention of government.

Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers
The Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) is the international trade association for not–for–profit publishers and those who work with them. Providing information on, education, representation, cooperative initiatives and guidelines for good practice.

Association of Publishing Agencies
The APA is the representative body for the customer publishing industry. Their members produce editorial content for client brands. That content can be anything from entire websites and magazines to smaller brochures and one–shot publications, produced to engage with a target audience and create a customer relationship.

Association of Online Publishers
The UK Association of Online Publishers (AOP) is an industry body representing digital publishing companies that create original, branded, quality content. It publishes research and runs a variety of conferences, awards and events for members including newspaper and magazine publishers, TV and radio broadcasters and pure online media.

British Printing Industries Federation
The BPIF is the principal business support organisation for the UK print, printed packaging and graphic communication industry. They provide training, advice on technical and legal, Health and Safety, environmental and quality issues.

Committee of Advertising Practice
The advertising codes are the responsibility of two industry Committees of Advertising Practice – CAP (Broadcast) and CAP (Non–broadcast) and are independently administered by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

Diversity in Publishing Network (DIPNET)
Established in 2004 to promote the status and contribution of social groups traditionally underrepresented within all areas of publishing, as well as support for those seeking to enter the industry. DIPNET is an initiative funded by Arts Council England and managed at Booktrust. DIPNET aims to redress the balance of equality in the UK publishing sector.

European Association of Directory Publishers
Founded in 1966, the European Association of Directory Publishers (EADP) owes its existence to the aspirations of European publishers who anticipated the importance of intra–European contact and co–operation. Meanwhile, it has become the nerve centre for year–round contact and the key representative for the industry. It is the only international association in Europe to speak for the sector as a whole.

European Publishers Council
The EPC is a high level group of Chairmen and CEOs of leading European media corporations actively involved in multimedia markets spanning newspaper, magazine, book, journal, internet and online database publishers. Many EPC members also have significant interests in commercial television and radio. The EPC works with opinion formers and legislators to protect freedom of speech, support high ethical standards, and protect media diversity and its ownership.

Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators
The UK body representing professional communicators and information designers. Aims to set and improve standards for communication of the scientific and technical information supporting products, services and business and provide specific training for scientific and technical communicators.

The Independent Alliance
The Independent Alliance is a global alliance of ten UK publishers and their international partners who share a common vision of editorial excellence, original, diverse publishing, innovation in marketing and commercial success.
It offers a range of exclusive benefits for its independent counterparts in bookselling, including increased terms, point of sale and dedicated promotions on titles from leading authors, aimed to help them promote their businesses and boost sales. Together, the publishers and booksellers are a unique umbrella organisation representing shared core values – Independence, Integrity, Quality and Range – in an increasingly centralised marketplace.

National Union of Journalists
The NUJ is a passionate campaigner for media freedom, the rights of journalists, workers' rights and for social justice at home and internationally. They work to protect and promote media freedom, professionalism and ethical standards in all media.

The Newspaper Society
The Society represents and promotes the interests of Britain's regional and local press. It provides legal advice and lobbying, promotes local media to advertisers and agencies, and holds conferences and events.

Professional Publishers Association
The Professional Publishers Association (PPA) is the organisation for magazine and professional media publishers in the UK. PPA aims to promote the medium of magazines through its marketing initiatives, protect its members through its legal and public affairs activities and advise the industry through its communications training work.

The Publishers Association
This is the trade association for book, journal and electronic publishers in the UK. It aims to strengthen the trading environment for publishers, providing a strong voice for industry in government, society and internationally, and provide information, support and guidance for the industry in a digital context.

Publishing Scotland
Publishing Scotland has grown from the Scottish Publishers Association to provide industry support, lobbying, networking and training for the industry. Its website offers training opportunities and events listings, as well as industry news.

Scottish Newspaper Publishers Association
The Scottish Newspaper Publishers Association (SNPA) is the trade association representing publishers of weekly and bi–weekly newspapers. It provides an overview of the industry and current issues of importance, as well as a range of services including the promotion of The Scottish Weekly Press, lobbying, self-regulatory support and best practice for members.

Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP)
The SfEP is a professional organisation based in the UK for editors and proofreaders – the people who strive to make text accurate and readable. Its three main aims are to promote high editorial standards, uphold the professional status of editors and proofreaders and encourage the use of services offered by SfEP members and associates. The SfEP has about 1,400 members and associates (mostly in the UK) providing editorial services to publishers and a wide range of companies, government agencies and other bodies. The Society provides training and professional qualifications, and publishes the online Directory of Editorial Services provided by its members.

Society of Editors
The Society of Editors works to protect the freedom of all sectors of the media to report on behalf of the public. It seeks to help the improvement of quality journalism through the active support of education and training. It has over 400 members in national, regional and local newspapers, magazines, broadcasting and new media, journalism education and media law.

Society of Indexers
The Society of Indexers is a non–profit organisation, membership of which is open to any person who is or intends to be directly involved in indexing. They provide continuing professional development training, accreditation and workshops for members.

The Society of Young Publishers
This is a voluntary organisation that runs many events and workshops for those wanting to get into publishing or who would like to develop their career further. Details of events and networking opportunities are available on the Society's homepage.

International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (STM)
STM is an international association of about 110 scientific, technical, medical and scholarly publishers, Representing all types of STM publishers – large and small companies, not for profit organisations, learned societies, traditional, primary, secondary publishers and new entrants to global publishing, in 21 countries.

The Welsh Books Council
The Welsh Books Council is a national body, funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, which provides a focus for the publishing industry in Wales. It provides a range of specialist services including editing, design, marketing and distribution with a view to increasing standards of Welsh and English book publishing. It also distributes grants to publishers and works to promote reading and literacy in Wales.
