Apprenticeships in the North West
An Advanced Apprenticeship in Media Production is being launched on 7 November in North West England, the first of its kind in the UK.
Skillset has worked closely with the BBC, the Learning and Skills Council and North West Vision and Media to develop this qualification.
20 lucky apprentices aged between 16 and 22 were selected from almost 300 applicants. They started the course in September 2007. The apprentices are working across a range of companies including All Out Productions, the BBC, Centini, ITV Granada and Objective North.
The training will focus on producing skills that will be applied in research, production and interactive media. On successful completion, the apprentices will receive a Level 3 qualification, equivalent to two A levels. But just as importantly, they will have developed the skills that industry employers need from new entrants. And the industry will benefit from fresh talent who may have a different approach from those for whom university is the preferred progression route.
Although this pilot apprenticeship scheme is running in the North of England, it is believed that it could be introduced into other regions in the future.
