The most important choice is about the subject areas learners will want to study

Choices the Diploma offers

Young people studying the Diploma in Creative and Media will make many choices and follow their interests.

The first important choice is about the subject areas they want to study, choosing from the list of creative industries below. Students of the Higher Diploma need to choose a minimum of six and students of the Advanced Diploma a minimum of four:

2D Visual Art

Creative Writing

Interactive Media

3D Visual Art

Dance

Music

Advertising

Drama

Photo Imaging

Animation

Fashion

Product Design

Audio and Radio

Film

Television

Computer Games

Footwear

Textiles

Craft

Graphic Design

This list will include Printing and Publishing from 2009.

Having made this choice, learners will be able to keep a varied study programme, or specialise more in one subject area than the others. This could take the form of a qualification in design or a Graded Examination in music. Students will also be able to choose a subject outside the Diploma to broaden their studies.

All learners of the Diploma will complete a project. What the project is about will be entirely the choice of the student. The aim is to develop in young people the skills involved in researching a topic by themselves.

Compulsory elements of the Diploma
As well as these choices, there will be some parts of the Diploma which everyone will do.

Through the compulsory course, students will learn how to think and work creatively and how to develop and communicate ideas clearly. This creative work will be placed in the context of business and enterprise through work related learning.

In years 10 and 11, core national curriculum subjects like maths, PE and science will still be studied. Students will all need to reach a minimum standard in English, maths and ICT - these subjects can be studied within the Diploma or as a GCSE alongside it.

Learners will also do ten days' work experience at each level of the Diploma.
