Crafts Council
The Crafts Council is the national development agency for contemporary crafts in the UK. Funded by Arts Council England, its core objectives are to promote the teaching and studying of contemporary craft within schools and to make its collection publicly accessible.
Launched in 2006, ‘Making It Yours' are touring learning resources featuring original work of leading UK craft makers, Craft works from the council's collection are loaned for one term to specialist schools that can accommodate a complete exhibition, supported by handling objects, audio, video and written interpretation.
Two courses involving ceramics and metal are available for specialist schools to book with accompanying teacher packs for students at Key Stages 3 and 4.
Seeing high quality work at first hand raised the aspirations of students. Being able to handle some of the objects also enabled them to understand and learn more about materiality and technique and to appreciate the three dimensional quality of the works.
Teachers welcomed the opportunity for young people to engage with a high quality national exhibition as a learning resource, and the fact that it was on school premises for 12 weeks so that work could be planned across a whole term.
Local feeder school classes have also taken the opportunity to visit the exhibition.
