FD Case Study - Ravensbourne College
Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication was an early adopter of Foundation Degrees across a wide range of courses, which include FdA in Broadcast Operations and Production, FdA Broadcast Post Production, FdA Creative Sound Design and FdSc in Broadcast Media Technology. Ravensbourne has long-established links with the broadcasting industry and is a National Centre of Excellence for Broadcasting, benefiting from a multi-million pound endowment from the UK's independent television companies.
The technical facilities at Ravensbourne closely mirror industry practice. The courses make extensive use of experienced industry professionals and guest lecturers who bring the latest specialist knowledge of current practice to the courses.
Scott is a 25 year old student in the second year Foundation Degree in Broadcast Media Technology. Prior to joining the course he was working as a Trainee Engineer at Ascent Media. "I decided to do the course as I felt I was unable to learn what I needed while working. ... I have found it really useful to take time learning the theory behind Broadcast Engineering.
Due to the hectic nature of the business it is extremely difficult for anyone take the time to teach you these things, and I felt there were huge gaps in my knowledge which I needed to fill, and the course at Ravensbourne has helped me do this. Being able to relate the practical on the course to the theory we are taught has given me a greater sense of confidence and fulfilment in my work at Ascent Media".
Adrian Bull, Director of Engineering at Ascent Media, said: "Now he is in his second year at Ravensbourne, it is obvious how Scott's ability is improving and how capable he is to deal with problems as they arise. Being a mature student and working prior to Ravensbourne, Scott has a massive advantage with an understanding of the business process and work ethic. This should not be underestimated, Scott I am sure will graduate with an advantage greater than most - his established dedication and enthusiasm will now be supported with a thorough technical knowledge."
