What are Skillset Professional Qualifications?
NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) and SVQs (Scottish Vocational Qualifications) are work-based qualifications that assess a person's ability to perform the skills and competencies that are required for a particular job role.
The qualifications below are based on the 2006 version of the Lighting National Occupational Standards and were developed through consultation with industry practitioners and ASPEC lighting companies.
There are NVQs at levels 3 and 4:
Level 3 N-SVQ in Film and Television (Lighting Technician)
Level 3 N-SVQ in Film and Television (Best Boy)
Level 3 N-SVQ in Film and Television (Console Operator)
Level 3 N-SVQ in Film and Television (Generator Operator)
Level 4 N-SVQ in Film and Television (Gaffer)
These NVQs are available in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. To work towards an NVQ, you need to be in full time or part time employment or working as a freelancer in a role that will enable you to demonstrate the skills and knowledge that the NVQ covers.
You will be assessed 'on the job' as you demonstrate each of the competencies in the different units. You will also be required to gather evidence to support your performance, which may include witness statements from your employer or external assessor confirming that you have demonstrated a particular skill or set of skills. This portfolio of evidence will be submitted on your completion of the NVQ.
