What can Skillset Professional Qualifications do for me?
NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) and SVQs (Scottish Vocational Qualifications) are work–based qualifications that assess a person's ability to perform the skills and competencies that are required for a particular job role.
For Animal Trainers and Suppliers Lantra has developed several qualifications awarded by City & Guilds as per the list below:
- The NVQ/SNVQ in Animal Care at Level 1 is aimed at Work experience and younger personnel
The NVQ/SNVQ Animal Care at Level 2 has different pathways which aim at diferent roles such as Animal Handlers, Assistant Trainers and Animal Handler Trainees
The NVQ/SNVQ Animal Care at Level 3 is aimed at Animal Trainers. Please find qualification structure below:
Animal Training in the audio visual industries - Level 3The NVQ/SNVQ Animal Care at Level 4 is aimed at Heads of Department (HOD) or Animal Consultants . Please find qualification structure below:
Animal Handlers on Audio Visual Production Sets - Level 4These qualifications were developed through consultation with industry practitioners and are based on the Animal Care National Occupational Standards.

Getting qualified
To work towards an N/SVQ, you need to be in full time or part time employment or working as a freelancer in a role that will enable you to demonstrate the skills and knowledge that the N/SVQ covers.
You will be assessed 'on the job' as you demonstrate each of the competencies in the different units. You will also be required to gather evidence to support your performance, which may include witness statements from your employer or external assessor confirming that you have demonstrated a particular skill or set of skills. This portfolio of evidence will be submitted on your completion of the NVQ.
