Types of Vocational Qualification

VQs are offered by a large number of awarding bodies and range from broad-based VQs to specialist qualifications designed for a particular sector. They can serve a range of purposes in different sectors and at different levels, and so vary greatly in terms of size, level and assessment method. Candidates who gain VQs can follow a pathway to employment or further study.

Vocational qualifications offered in England, Wales and Northern Ireland include:

  • Vocational GCSE
  • Vocational A Level (AVCE)
  • BTEC National
  • Higher National Diploma (HND)
  • Technical Certificate
Vocational Qualifications in Scotland differ in title and structure. They are broken down into units that are assigned credit, which are included in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF).
