Radio Workforce
Radio has a highly-skilled and well-qualified workforce of which almost two thirds are graduates.
About a quarter of the workforce is freelance or employed on contracts of less than a year.
On average the radio workforce is older than that of the creative media industries as a whole. About half the workforce is female.
The radio industry employs a relatively low proportion of people from minority ethnic groups, compared both with the local populations from which it recruits, and with the wider creative media industries. The proportion of people with a disability in radio is higher than that across the creative media industries as a whole, but low compared to the wider population.
The majority of the workforce is based in London. However, the nature of local and community radio services means that the radio workforce is more widely dispersed throughout the UK than other creative media sectors, with major clusters in the South East and the North West regions of England, and in Scotland.
