Why is the Route into Radio Project needed?

Broadcast radio is the second largest sector within creative media for the South East region in terms of workforce size (source: Skillset Census 2006).

The Radio and South East teams at Skillset have consistently encountered through their consultation work with industry, the lack of clear entry routes for job roles in radio that did not involve journalism. The Route into Radio project aims to develop training to facilitate diversity within the radio industry, and provide a broad range of practical skills required by employers.

The evidence for the skills needs addressed by this project can be found in Skillset's ‘Radio Industry Skills Strategy' which is based on extensive research conducted by Skillset (sources: Skillset Census 2006, Workforce Survey 2005, Radio Employer Survey, and Radio Industry Focus Groups), Ofcom's report ‘The Future of Radio' and intelligence gathered at the high profile industry conference Radio 3.0 held earlier this year.

The Route into Radio project is the first of its kind nationally and aims to be the first major intervention within the radio sector when Skillset's Radio Skills Strategy.
