FAQ - Route into Radio
What is it?
Route into Radio is an innovative pilot project which aims to develop training within the radio industry and provide the practical skills required by employers in their entry level staff.
The project began in January 2008 and will be completed by Spring 2009, by which time 36 interns will have been trained across the South East region. The training has been via a series of workshops delivered by high end industry practitioners and a 25 day internship, where interns are assigned an industry mentor. During this time interns will also work towards 2 units of the City & Guilds Media Techniques Diploma at Level 3.
The project teaches practical aspects of training in a live broadcast environment, involving people from varied backgrounds, freelancers, the fledgling community radio sector, the BBC and the well established commercial sector.
What happens at the end of the project?
Towards the end of the project the interns will be given training in how to further their career and utilise the information they have learnt in job hunting.
An industry conference is being planned to take place in February 2009, where Skillset will share the model created by this pilot as well as debate the issues raised by the project, including nurturing talent, diversity and recruitment issues. The conference promises to attract big industry players and debate key industry issues such as emerging business models.
This project is being piloted in the South East region, but may be developed in other areas of the country following this pilot. Please keep an eye on these pages for further information on the projects roll-out.
