Tuning In video: Diversity in the radio industry

In recent years, the radio industry has made efforts to ensure that its workforce and the content it broadcasts is more truly representative of UK society as a whole. There is still much to do.

Individuals from a Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) background make up 7% of the radio industry workforce, the same proportion as the working age population across the entire UK economy. However, almost 24% of London's population of working age is from a BAME background; with two fifths of the radio workforce based in London, only 11% is from a BAME background. 6% of individuals working in the radio industry consider themselves to be disabled compared with 8% in the wider creative media workforce.

Diversity was a key topic of discussion at the Tuning In conference, exploring the importance both of making the industry more open to talent from all backgrounds and of ensuring plurality of output.
