Feature Film Production Workforce Survey Report 2008

Half the UK's film production workforce says that it needs more training.

This is according to UK film production crew as captured in the Skillset-UK Film Council Feature Film Production Workforce Survey Report 2008, published here. And it is little wonder. The film industry, in the UK and around the world, is going through a period of rapid transformation. With the advent of new technologies, 90% of the workforce recognise that the skills needed to work in the industry are going to change.

Despite this, the results of this year's survey do not show much change from those of the earlier survey in 2005. Roughly half the workforce has not received any kind of training. In addition, there are particular areas where significant improvement is needed:

  • To create a more diverse workforce by recruiting and retaining: more women, people from ethnic minority communities, and people with disabilities;
  • To reduce the amount of unpaid work that people in our industry are expected to do in order to gain experience before getting paid work;
  • To enable the workforce to receive more training by supporting them through financial subsidies and more convenient delivery, i.e. flexible location and timing.
