Government backs Skillset and industry
14 July 2003
Skillset, the Sector Skills Council for the audio visual industries, has been given a major role in delivering the Governments new National Skills Strategy (England), announced last week. The flagship strategy places employers centre stage to create a demand led education and training system responsive to business needs. This will be delivered through their Sector Skills Councils (SSCs). Skillset was the first 'trailblazer' SSC.
Clive Jones, Head of Carlton TV, Joint Managing Director of ITV welcomed the strategy saying:
"The government has realised that if economic productivity is to improve, employers need to be in the driving seat when it comes to skills. In the past employers have felt remote and distant from learning provision, but this strategy gives us more input through Skillset so we get exactly what we need. It's a much more joined up approach and is an opportunity we should take full advantage of."
Launching the Skills Strategy White Paper: "21st Century Skills: Realising our Potential", Chancellor Gordon Brown said:
"Skills are Britain's Achilles heel - Improving skills will be central to our next Spending Review, so today's White Paper is a vital step to forge new partnerships, expand skills and make labour markets work more flexibly. "
The strategy gives fresh impetus to the drive for a more skilled workforce and cites employer involvement through the SSC network as crucial. As part of the Network, Skillset is charged with: identifying, mapping and meeting the key skills needs in the audio visual industries; developing agreements with employers on the action that needs to be tackle to tackle skills gaps; and reforming qualifications to make them more employer friendly.

1. Skillset is the Sector Skills Council for the audio visual industries. Audio visual industries in this context means, the Broadcast, Film, Video and Interactive Media Industries. Skillset was the first Sector Skills Council to be licensed by the Secretary of State for Education and Skills and by Ministers in the devolved administrations in 2002 to tackle the skills and productivity challenge. Sector Skills Councils (SSCs) are independent, UK wide organisations developed by groups of influential employers in industry or business sectors of economic or strategic significance. SSCs are employer-led and actively involve trade unions, professional bodies and other stakeholders in the sector.
