Careers Day is runaway success

14 April 2003

Top industry figures gathered together on Friday 11th April to offer runners help and advice on how to develop their careers and tell them how to move onwards and upwards in the audio visual industries. The third Skillset Runners Career Information Day took place at Kensington Town Hall and was attended by 200 runners all hungry for tips and advice from those who've already made it. The event was funded by London Central Learning and Skills Council and Channel 4.

Keynote speakers included Gina Carter - Producer at Revolution Films, Grant Mansfield - Creative Director at RDF Media, Sadie Nine - Presenter at BBC London Radio, Henry Klejdys - Producer of Phoenix Nights, Emma Turner - Producer of Holby City and Willber Willberforce, Programmes Editor of IXtra.

Workshops covered working in broadcasting, film, the independent sector, radio, post production, commercials and animation giving runners the opportunity to meet top directors, producers, production managers, broadcasters and animators and find out how they got ahead in the industry and what they look for in the people they hire. skillsformedia, the industry careers service, had advisors on hand to offer information and advice.

Emma Turner, Producer of Holby City, gave runners the following advice:

"Try not to be too ambitious too soon. Take the time to learn. If you rush through it, the gaps in your knowledge will be exposed and could cost you dear. The motto is 'Don't run until you can walk', and remember that as a runner it is your job to anticipate the problems and before they occur and the needs of your cast and crew before they ask!"

David Florez, who has been a runner for Planet 24 and Rose Hackney Barber, said:

"Overall the day was a great mixture of common sense and top tips. Good questions were met with frank and detailed responses. Remarkably beneficial for a young runner like myself."

Notes to Editor
1. Skillset is the Sector Skills Council for the audio visual industries. Audio visual industries in this context means, the Broadcast, Film, Video and Interactive Media Industries. Skillset was the first Sector Skills Council to be licensed by the Secretary of State for Education and Skills and by Ministers in the devolved administrations in 2002 to tackle the skills and productivity challenge. Sector Skills Councils (SSCs) are independent, UK wide organisations developed by groups of influential employers in industry or business sectors of economic or strategic significance. SSCs are employer-led and actively involve trade unions, professional bodies and other stakeholders in the sector.
