Census 2003: What shape are we in?

Skillset's annual census of the audio visual industries will take place on Wednesday 25 June 2003. The results, which will be published at the end of the year, will indicate the longer term impact on the workforce of events such as the collapse of ITV digital, job cuts at Channel 4 and the BBC and the rise of DV and low cost productions. The survey forms will be distributed to company Chief Executives and HR managers via trade associations and trade publications and an electronic version will be available for completion at www.skillsetcensus.org.

The Census is the established independent measure of the shape and size of the industry by sector. This is the fourth consecutive year Skillset has profiled the workforce broken down by the number of employees, freelancers, women, minority ethnic groups and disabled people working on Census Day. The information collected allows the industry to identify changes in the labour force, chart areas of growth and decline and target investment in skills development to ensure industry needs are met.

Clive Jones, Head of Carlton TV, Joint Managing Director of ITV and Skillset Chair said:

"Benchmarking as a springboard for change is one of Skillset's major priorities. This will be the fourth census and will enable us to identify important emerging trends, and on this basis we will be able to plan our investment in skills."

Sector Skills Councils (SSCs) are independent, UK wide organisations developed by groups of influential employers in industry or business sectors of economic or strategic significance. SSCs are employer-led and actively involve trade unions, professional bodies and other stakeholders in the sector.
