skillsformedia Gains National Recognition of Excellence

10 March 2003

skillsformedia, the media industry careers advice and guidance service, has been awarded the prestigious matrix quality standard for information advice and guidance services. skillsformedia were among a total of 39 organisations to receive the Award and Certificate from Cllr Roy Walters, Lord Mayor of Manchester at a recent celebration event at Manchester Town Hall. The matrix Standard is the national quality mark for organisations delivering information, advice and guidance (IAG) services about learning and work.

Dinah Caine, Skillset Chief Executive said:

"skillsformedia provides a crucial service for those wanting to get in and get on in the audio visual industries especially freelancers who have few careers and training support mechanisms. Gaining the matrix Standard means we can feel confident we are achieving best practice in this vital area. We've also been able to benchmark - a process that has benefited us as an organisation and given us valuable pointers for future developments."

Praising the latest organisations to gain the Standard, Adult Skills Minister Ivan Lewis said:

"If we are to have the high productivity, high skill and high wage economy we all want, we need a workforce with an informed demand for learning and skills. It's about hard-edged economic success so that we can compete and succeed in an increasingly competitive global economy. We need our best companies and organisations to be at the cutting edge in the world markets."

Notes to Editor

1. Skillset is the Sector Skills Council for the Audio Visual Industries. Audio visual industries in this context means, the Broadcast, Film, Video and Interactive Media Industries. Skillset was the first Sector Skills Council to be licensed by the Secretary of State for Education and Skills and by Ministers in the devolved administrations in 2002 to tackle the skills and productivity challenge. Sector Skills Councils (SSCs) are independent, UK wide organisations developed by groups of influential employers in industry or business sectors of economic or strategic significance. SSCs are employer-led and actively involve trade unions, professional bodies and other stakeholders in the sector.

2. The Employment NTO is the guardian of the matrix quality standard for information advice and guidance services on behalf of the DfES. The purpose of the Employment NTO is the enhancement and the improvement of the performance of people involved in the development, training, management, health and safety and representation of people in the workplace.

3. The Employment NTO was formed by a merger of the Employment Occupational Standards Council and the Occupational Health and Safety Lead Board. It is governed by a Council and various Work Groups with members drawn from a wide range of occupations and industries, and represent employers, trade unions and local and national government. The main occupational areas covered by the Employment NTO are Advice & Guidance, Training & Development, Trade Unions, Health & Safety and Personnel.

4. The Guidance Accreditation Board (GAB) is the independent body that assesses organisations against the Standard and awards the matrix Quality Mark. For more information on the work of the GAB please contact Rebecca Marsh on 0121 456 6092 or visit the GAB website www.gab.org.uk.

5. The matrix Standard complements Investors in People by focusing primarily on information, advice and guidance (IAG) services. Of the first wave of organisations to be accredited to the matrix Standard many also hold Investors in People recognition.
