Developing media business leaders in Wales

7th February 2005. SKILLSET Cymru has announced the launch of a unique business programme designed to develop the next generation of creative industry leaders in Wales. The Leading Media Businesses (LMB) programme will cover strategic leadership, business management skills, finance, and developing new ideas. Twelve owners and senior managers from television, animation and interactive media companies throughout Wales will be selected to take part in this elite 9 month programme delivered by Cardiff Business School.

Gwawr Hughes, Director of Skillset Cymru, said:

"We have a thriving independent media sector in Wales keen to take advantage of the opportunities for new business and expansion bought about by the Communications Act. This programme will be tailored to their specific needs helping them to drive their businesses forward to benefit their staff, their profits and the Welsh economy."

Skillset Cymru is the Sector Skills Council for the Audio Visual Industries and has commissioned Cardiff Business School to develop the LMB programme based on its research. Consisting of a series of two-day events; including master classes, networking events and the support from a personal coach, the programme is designed to encourage participants to explore their leadership style and aspirations whilst at the same time tackling specific issues related to their business. Completion of the programme will provide accreditation towards the prestigious Cardiff University MBA.

Brian Morgan, Director of the Leadership & Enterprise Unit at Cardiff Business School, recently named Business School of the Year by Business Britain magazine, said:

"Good managers do things better, but good leaders do better things. Cardiff Business School research has shown that strategic leadership is a key factor in the success and growth of companies. Our aim is that this programme will develop good leaders, who can take their firms forward and act as a driving force for the Welsh economy."

To highlight the practical advantages of LMB, two half-day "taster workshops" are being run in February 2005.
