National Skills Day returns for second year
Media Industries devote day to talent and skills development
For the second year running the Creative Media industries are staging National Skills Day to help focus attention on the importance of skills development to its future success and competitiveness. National Skills Day 2006 will take place on Thursday 25 May, and will see companies across the broadcast, film and interactive media sectors give staff the opportunity to update and improve a variety of their skills and experience.
Skillset, Broadcast, BBC, ITV, Channel 4, five, Pact and BECTU have joined forces to raise awareness of the fundamental importance of skills, development and career progression to the future of the industry. National Skills Day is an opportunity for the entire industry to focus on skills, highlighting the needs to continually develop the highly skilled workforce on which the industry depends.
Clive Jones, Chair of Skillset and Chief Executive, ITV News Group, said:
“The concept behind National Skills Day is simple - a day devoted to improving the skills of the workforce. Its objective is twofold. Firstly, learning something new, different, more than usual. And secondly, to raise awareness of the importance of skills development and the very real business benefits it can deliver. It's about offering a small helping hand to the people you work with and who work for you and I hope employers in our industry across the UK take advantage of it.”
Organisations across the industry are implementing initiatives for National Skills Day. For example, Channel 4 are focusing on new media and running training sessions on blogging, the effect of new media on news, web design and digital editing. ITV and BECTU are running workshops on personal development, releasing your potential and creative writing as well as launching job swap and mentoring opportunities.
