Standards

Using Occupational Standards to Develop your Workforce

National Occupational Standards can be an incredibly useful tool to assist employers in developing their workforce.

The standards provide recognised benchmarks for competent performance. The standards have many uses and can be a particularly useful HR and training tool assisting professionals in:

  • Recruitment and selection
  • Drawing up person specifications and job descriptions
  • Appraisal
  • Competence assessment
  • Succession and career development activities
  • Training design and delivery
  • Designing reward systems

  • One company who has used standards is Picture Canning; Phil Wade, the Managing Director, winner of the B+ Company Development Award 2003, told us: "We map our in house training against the Skillset standards. They are an essential tool for employers, many of which are small companies without HR facilities. They provide a breakdown of the array of jobs across sectors and the skills needed to do them, setting the standard for the entire industry which is invaluable in matching the expectations of people trying to get into the industry with what employers need from them."

Skillset has produced a number of Guides which have been developed to support organisations. Download them here for free!
